Audrey Niffenegger (born June 13, 1963, in South Haven, Michigan) is an American writer and visual artist based in Chicago and London. Her 2003 debut novel The Time Traveler's Wife, about Henry, a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily travel through time, and Clare, the woman who loves him across the disordered timeline of his disappearances, became a national bestseller and was adapted into both a 2009 film starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams and a 2022 HBO television series. Niffenegger is also a professor in the Interdisciplinary Book Arts MFA Program at Columbia College Chicago's Center for Book and Paper Arts, and much of her other work blends prose with visual art, including her illustrated novels The Night Bookmobile and Raven Girl. Her second prose novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, followed in 2009. Niffenegger has said The Time Traveler's Wife began as an exploration of the practical, emotional difficulty of loving someone whose presence you cannot rely on, rather than as a genre time-travel concept.
