Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963) was a British writer and scholar, a professor of medieval and Renaissance literature at both Oxford and Cambridge, best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, a seven-book fantasy series for children begun with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950. Lewis served in World War I and, after a well-documented conversion from atheism to Christianity in his early thirties, became one of the twentieth century's most influential Christian writers, authoring both explicitly theological works like Mere Christianity and the deeply allegorical Narnia series, which draws heavily on Christian imagery beneath its adventure-fantasy surface. He was a close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, and the two were core members of the Oxford literary discussion group known as the Inklings. The Chronicles of Narnia have sold more than 100 million copies in 47 languages and have been adapted for film, television, and radio numerous times since their publication.

Notable works: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Chronicles of Narnia; Mere Christianity
