Christopher Paolini (born November 17, 1983, in Southern California) is an American author who began writing Eragon, the first book in his Inheritance Cycle, at age fifteen after being homeschooled through high school. His family self-published the novel in 2002, and Paolini spent a year touring schools and libraries in full medieval costume to promote it before Alfred A. Knopf acquired and re-released it in 2003, when Paolini was nineteen. Eragon became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a 2006 film, and Paolini completed the Inheritance Cycle across three more volumes, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance, with the full series selling more than 40 million copies worldwide. He has continued writing in the same universe with later novels including Murtagh, and has also published science fiction under the same meticulous, world-building-heavy approach that defined his fantasy debut.
