Ernest Cline is an American novelist and screenwriter best known for his 2011 debut novel Ready Player One, a science fiction adventure set largely inside a massive virtual-reality universe called the OASIS, built around a treasure hunt that requires deep knowledge of 1980s pop culture. Cline, an avowed child of the 1980s himself, packed the novel with references to video games, films, and music from the decade, and the book became a bestseller and cult favorite among gamers and genre readers before Steven Spielberg adapted it into a 2018 feature film, for which Cline co-wrote the screenplay. He followed it with a sequel, Ready Player Two, and the novel Armada. Cline is also an established slam poet and has said his own geek-culture obsessions directly inspired the novel's premise.
