F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) was an American novelist and short-story writer best known for The Great Gatsby (1925), a chronicle of the Jazz Age excess and disillusionment that is now considered one of the great American novels, despite selling modestly during his lifetime. Fitzgerald rose to fame with his 1920 debut, This Side of Paradise, published shortly before his marriage to Zelda Sayre, whose volatile, glamorous partnership with Fitzgerald became inseparable from his public image and his fiction. He spent much of the 1920s in Paris and on the French Riviera among fellow expatriate writers, experiences that shaped Tender Is the Night (1934). Fitzgerald struggled with alcoholism and financial instability in his later years, working as a Hollywood screenwriter before dying of a heart attack at 44, his final novel The Last Tycoon left unfinished. Gatsby's reputation grew enormously after his death and it is now a fixture of American literary education.
