Gillian Flynn (born February 24, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American author and screenwriter known for dark, psychologically complex thrillers set in the American Midwest. Raised by two community-college professors, Flynn studied at the University of Kansas and earned a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University before working as a television critic for Entertainment Weekly for a decade. Her third novel, Gone Girl (2012), spent eight consecutive weeks at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and remained on it for over a year, praised for its structure of alternating unreliable narrators and its unflinching portrait of a marriage gone wrong. Flynn wrote the Golden Globe-nominated screenplay for the 2014 film adaptation directed by David Fincher. Her earlier novels, Sharp Objects and Dark Places, were both New York Times bestsellers and were also adapted for screen. She lives in Chicago with her husband and children.
