J.R. Ward is the pen name of an American author, a #1 New York Times bestseller best known for the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, a long-running paranormal romance saga beginning with Dark Lover in 2005. The series follows a brotherhood of vampire warriors defending their race against a genocidal enemy, and has become one of the best-selling and most influential paranormal romance series of the 2000s, with more than fifteen million copies of Ward's novels in print across more than two dozen countries. Ward, who also writes contemporary fiction under her legal name Jessica Bird, has built the Black Dagger Brotherhood into an unusually expansive continuity spanning dozens of novels and novellas, each centered on a different member of the brotherhood, with readers frequently entering the series expecting to follow one book and staying for the full sprawling cast. She is known for a distinctive, slang-heavy vernacular voice for her vampire warriors that has become one of the series' most recognizable stylistic signatures.
