Jordan B. Peterson is a Canadian clinical psychologist and former professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, best known for his 2018 book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, which combines essays on ethics, psychology, mythology, and religion into practical life advice and became an international bestseller. Peterson gained wide public attention in 2016 for his public opposition to a Canadian bill regarding gender-identity language, which launched him into a prominent and controversial role as a commentator on culture, politics, and psychology, with a large following built substantially through YouTube lectures and podcast appearances. He followed 12 Rules for Life with the sequel Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life in 2021. Before his public profile grew, Peterson had a substantial academic career studying the psychology of religious and ideological belief, and maintained a clinical psychology practice.
