Patrick Rothfuss (born June 6, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin) is an American fantasy author best known for the Kingkiller Chronicle series. He spent nearly a decade writing and revising his 2007 debut novel The Name of the Wind while working toward an English degree at Wisconsin Lake Superior State University, and the finished book became a New York Times bestseller praised for its lyrical prose and intricately structured frame narrative. The sequel, The Wise Man's Fear, followed in 2011, also debuting at #1 on the New York Times list, though the long-promised third volume has yet to be published, making Rothfuss one of fantasy's most discussed cases of an unfinished trilogy. He founded Worldbuilders, a charitable organization that has raised millions of dollars for Heifer International through annual fundraising drives tied to his fanbase.
