Paula Hawkins (born August 26, 1972, in Salisbury, Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) is a British author and former financial journalist best known for her 2015 debut thriller The Girl on the Train, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and remained there for thirteen consecutive weeks. A graduate of Keble College, Oxford, Hawkins worked as a journalist for fifteen years, including at The Times, before writing four unsuccessful romantic comedy novels under the pen name Amy Silver. Struggling financially and having to borrow money from her father, she wrote The Girl on the Train, a psychological thriller narrated by an unreliable alcoholic protagonist, in six months; it became the fastest-selling adult novel of all time at the point of its release and was adapted into a 2016 film starring Emily Blunt. Hawkins was named to the BBC's 100 Women list in 2016 and has since published Into the Water and A Slow Fire Burning, both bestsellers.
