Paulo Coelho (born August 24, 1947) is a Brazilian novelist best known worldwide for The Alchemist (1988), an allegorical novel following a shepherd's journey to fulfill his "Personal Legend," which has sold more than 150 million copies and been translated into over 80 languages, making it one of the best-selling books in history. Before becoming a novelist, Coelho worked as a songwriter in Brazil, collaborating with prominent Brazilian musicians, and pursued a range of countercultural and spiritual paths in his youth, including a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago that shaped his later fiction. His books, blending fable, spirituality, and self-discovery themes, have made him one of the most translated living authors, and he is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
