Peter Thiel is a German-born American entrepreneur, investor, and author, best known as a co-founder of PayPal and the first outside investor in Facebook, as well as co-founder of the data-analytics company Palantir Technologies. His 2014 book Zero to One, co-written with Blake Masters, was developed from notes Masters took of a Stanford course Thiel taught on startups, and argues that true innovation comes from creating something genuinely new, going from "zero to one," rather than copying and incrementally improving existing ideas. The book became a bestseller widely read in venture capital and startup circles for its contrarian take on competition, monopoly, and technological progress. Thiel co-founded the venture capital firm Founders Fund and has been an early investor in numerous technology companies beyond PayPal and Facebook.
