Sarah Janet Maas (born March 5, 1986, in New York City) is an American fantasy author and one of the best-selling novelists of the past decade, with more than 75 million copies of her books sold worldwide as of 2024, translated into forty languages. Raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Maas began writing what would become her debut novel at sixteen, posting early chapters under the title Queen of Glass on FictionPress.com, where the story became one of the most popular on the site. She studied creative writing and religious studies at Hamilton College, graduating magna cum laude in 2008, and began working toward traditional publication with her literary agent, Tamar Rydzinski. The Throne of Glass series, published by Bloomsbury beginning in 2012, established her as a major force in young adult fantasy. Her second series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, which began in 2015 as a loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in a fae world, became a global cultural phenomenon amplified by BookTok and Instagram, with the ACOTAR hashtag alone accumulating billions of views on TikTok. The series spans five main novels plus novellas, with a sixth announced. Her third series, Crescent City, launched in 2020 for an adult audience. For the tenth anniversary of A Court of Thorns and Roses in 2025, Maas personally selected narrator Elizabeth Evans, a close friend, to re-record the entire ACOTAR series. Maas lives in Pennsylvania with her husband Josh Wasserman and their two children.
