Sophie Kinsella is the pen name of Madeleine Wickham, a British author and former financial journalist best known for the Shopaholic series and a string of romantic comedy bestsellers including Can You Keep a Secret?, published in 2003. Before turning to the Kinsella pen name, she wrote several novels under her own name and worked as a financial journalist, an unlikely background that shows up throughout her fiction's comic, detail-precise handling of money, debt, and consumer culture. Can You Keep a Secret? follows Emma Corrigan, who confesses her most humiliating secrets to a stranger on a turbulent flight, only to discover on Monday morning that the stranger is her company's new CEO; the novel was adapted into a film in 2019. Kinsella has sold more than 40 million books worldwide and her novels have been translated into more than thirty languages. She is known for a specifically British comic voice, dense with class-inflected slang and self-deprecating internal monologue, that has made her one of the defining voices of 2000s and 2010s romantic comedy fiction.
