Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) was a Swedish journalist and writer best known for the Millennium trilogy, beginning with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, published posthumously in 2005. Larsson spent much of his career as a journalist investigating right-wing extremism and anti-democratic movements, work that led to his founding the magazine Expo, dedicated to documenting racist and extremist organizations in Sweden. He wrote the Millennium novels in his spare time and delivered the manuscripts to a publisher shortly before his sudden death from a heart attack in 2004 at age 50, meaning he never saw the extraordinary success of the series, which has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide and been adapted into multiple films. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo introduced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander, a character widely credited with reshaping the modern thriller genre.
