Williams won an Audie for this performance, and it rests on one crucial choice: Melanie's voice, bright, precise, eager to please, held with total sincerity even as the horror mounts. The innocence is never winked at, which is exactly why the dread works. Around her, Williams builds a tired, believable adult cast, the wounded idealist, the pragmatist soldier, the scientist whose ruthlessness has its own logic, and her pacing through the set pieces is quietly expert.
