Alex Michaelides (born September 4, 1977, in Cyprus) is a British-Cypriot author and screenwriter best known for his 2019 debut novel The Silent Patient, a psychological thriller that became the biggest-selling debut of the year worldwide, spending more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list and selling over 6.5 million copies in more than 49 countries. Michaelides holds an MA in English literature from Trinity College, Cambridge, and an MFA in screenwriting from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, and worked as a screenwriter before turning to fiction, writing The Devil You Know (2013) starring Rosamund Pike. He has said his post-graduate studies in psychotherapy and two years working at a secure adolescent mental health unit directly shaped The Silent Patient's premise. He followed it with The Maidens and The Fury, continuing to write psychological thrillers grounded in his clinical background.
