Dutch-American

Bessel van der Kolk is a Dutch-born psychiatrist and trauma researcher who has practiced and researched in the Boston area since the late 1970s. In 1984 he founded one of the first clinical and research centers in the United States dedicated to studying and treating traumatic stress in civilian populations, and he was a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes the brain. His 2014 book, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, synthesizes four decades of clinical and research experience into an account of how trauma reshapes the body as much as the mind, and has remained on the New York Times bestseller list for years since publication, becoming one of the most influential popular books on trauma and PTSD. Van der Kolk has proposed new diagnostic categories including "complex PTSD" and "developmental trauma disorder," and founded the Trauma Research Foundation to continue developing and disseminating trauma treatment methods.
