Colleen Hoover is an American author who became one of the best-selling novelists of the 2020s largely through word-of-mouth momentum on TikTok's BookTok community, an unusual path for a writer who began by self-publishing in 2012. Known primarily for emotionally intense contemporary romance, Hoover reached a much wider audience with It Ends with Us (2016), a novel addressing domestic abuse that later became a film starring Blake Lively, and with Verity, a departure into psychological thriller territory that became one of the most discussed audiobooks of its year for its ambiguous, hotly debated ending. Hoover has said several of her books draw on her own family history, and her willingness to write difficult, sometimes uncomfortable material within popular romance conventions has been central to her crossover appeal.
