Dune
The best-selling science fiction novel ever written gets one of the format's most unusual…
Frank Herbert (1920-1986) was an American science fiction author best known for Dune, published in 1965 after being rejected by more than twenty publishers, which went on to win both the Hugo and Nebula Awards and become the best-selling science fiction novel of all time. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Herbert worked as a journalist, TV cameraman, and oyster diver, among other jobs, before Dune's success allowed him to write full-time. The novel, inspired partly by his research into sand dune ecology on the Oregon coast, wove together ecology, religion, politics, and human evolution into a sprawling narrative that Herbert extended across five sequels. He described one of his central aims as challenging the "hero as savior" trope common in adventure fiction, warning against the dangers of charismatic leadership. Herbert wrote nearly thirty books in total before his death in 1986, and Dune remains one of the most influential and widely read works in science fiction.
Notable works: Dune; Dune Messiah; Children of Dune
