American · b. 1926–2016

Harper Lee (1926–2016) was an American novelist best known for To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and became one of the most widely read and taught novels in American literature. Drawing on her childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, Lee wrote about racial injustice and moral courage through the eyes of a young narrator, Scout Finch, in a story that has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Lee was famously private, giving few interviews after the novel's success, and did not publish another novel for over fifty years. In 2015, a companion work, Go Set a Watchman, was released under some controversy regarding the circumstances of its publication. Lee received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 for her contribution to American letters.
