Leigh Bardugo (born April 6, 1975, in Jerusalem) is a New York Times bestselling author known for creating the Grishaverse, a fantasy universe spanning the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology, and the King of Scars duology, later adapted into the Netflix series Shadow and Bone. Raised in Los Angeles by her grandparents, Bardugo describes the original Shadow and Bone trilogy as "Tsarpunk," drawing on early-nineteenth-century Russian aesthetics filtered through fantasy. Six of Crows, published in 2015, follows a crew of six young criminals on a heist in the Grishaverse city of Ketterdam and was named a New York Times Notable Book. Bardugo has been open about living with osteonecrosis, a condition affecting the hip, which she has discussed in relation to how she writes characters navigating physical difference and disability. Her 2019 novel Ninth House marked her first adult fiction, launching a separate dark academia series set at Yale, where she is an associate fellow.
