Shoe Dog
Phil Knight spent decades saying almost nothing publicly about how Nike was built. Shoe Dβ¦
Phil Knight (born February 24, 1938, in Portland, Oregon) is the co-founder of Nike, Inc., which he led as CEO from 1964 to 2004 and chaired through 2016. A middle-distance runner at the University of Oregon under legendary coach Bill Bowerman, Knight wrote a Stanford business school paper on importing low-cost, high-quality running shoes from Japan, an idea that became Blue Ribbon Sports and eventually Nike. His 2016 memoir Shoe Dog recounts the company's precarious early decades, including near-bankruptcy and constant cash-flow crises, in a candid account widely praised by figures including Bill Gates, who named it one of his favorite books of the year. Knight has since become a major philanthropist, with large gifts to Stanford, the University of Oregon, and Oregon Health & Science University. He lives in Oregon with his wife, Penny.
