Susan Cain (born 1968) is an American writer and lecturer best known for her 2012 book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, a New York Times bestseller translated into 40 languages that challenges the cultural bias favoring extroversion. Cain graduated with honors from Princeton University in 1989 and earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1993, then spent seven years as a corporate lawyer at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton before becoming a negotiations consultant. A self-described introvert who struggled with public speaking, Cain spent seven years researching and writing Quiet, drawing a parallel between the position of introverts today and women at the dawn of the feminist movement. Her TED talk on the topic has been viewed more than 11 million times. In 2015 she co-founded Quiet Revolution, an organization focused on the workplace, education, and parenting needs of introverts, and later wrote Quiet Power for young readers and Bittersweet, on sorrow and longing.
