Viktor E. Frankl (1905-1997) was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who survived four Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, during which his wife, parents, and brother were killed. Before his 1942 arrest, Frankl had already spent years developing logotherapy, a school of psychotherapy centered on the idea that the primary human drive is not pleasure but the search for meaning. His camp manuscript was confiscated on arrival at Auschwitz, and after liberation he reconstructed his ideas in Man's Search for Meaning, published in 1946, which combines a memoir of his camp experience with an outline of logotherapy. The book has sold more than 16 million copies in over 50 languages and is frequently cited among the most influential books of the 20th century. Frankl went on to hold professorships in neurology and psychiatry in Vienna and lectured internationally on meaning, suffering, and psychological resilience until his death in 1997.
