Let me orient you. Elspeth lives in a kingdom poisoned by a magical fog that infects people with strange, dangerous powers, powers the crown punishes with death. She hides the Nightmare, the ancient spirit sharing her mind, because he is her infection and her weapon both. When she falls in with Ravyn Yew, the king's captain who has his own reasons to hunt the magical Providence Cards that could cure or doom the realm, Elspeth is pulled into a dangerous game of collection, betrayal, and slow-burning attraction. Her handling of his rhyming interludes is the highlight of the whole production; listeners routinely say the verse landed far better heard than read. It is the kind of narration that adds a character the page can only imply.
