Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

About this audiobook

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson keeps getting kicked out of schools, and it turns out there is a reason: he is secretly the son of a Greek god, thrust into a world where Olympus still exists and monsters walk among mortals. Rick Riordan built an entire modern mythology-adventure genre on this premise, and it remains one of the most beloved entry points into fantasy for younger readers two decades later.

Jesse Bernstein, a seven-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, narrates the entire Percy Jackson series, and AudioFile magazine specifically singled out his "masterpiece" as the boyish, sarcastic voice he finds for Percy himself, alongside a genuinely wide range for the surrounding cast, from Grover the nervous satyr to the haughty, thundering tones he gives Zeus. Bernstein weaves real Greek mythology into the fantasy so naturally that, as one reviewer put it, listeners learn the actual myths almost without noticing.

Story: 4.5. Narration: 4.6. An excellent starting point for younger listeners or anyone wanting mythology made genuinely fun rather than academic.
