The Princess Bride

About this audiobook

Framed as an "abridged" retelling of a centuries-old classic tale, William Goldman's The Princess Bride follows Westley and Buttercup through pirates, giants, sword fighting, and "rodents of unusual size," all narrated with a wry, self-aware voice that winks at every fantasy-adventure cliché even while fully committing to the romance and swashbuckling underneath. The 1987 film adaptation, which Goldman also wrote, became a beloved cult classic, and much of the book's appeal lies in how faithfully that adaptation preserved its tone.

This abridged audiobook edition is narrated by Rob Reiner, the film's director, a genuinely unusual pairing of storyteller and story, and listeners who grew up on the movie describe hearing Reiner's voice deliver the material as a direct extension of that affection, with several noting his interjected asides and remarks made them laugh in ways that felt true to the film's spirit even in this shorter, condensed audio format.

Story: 4.5. Narration: 4.3, worth noting this is an abridged edition rather than the complete text.
