If The Four Winds showed you what Kristin Hannah can do with the Great Depression, The Nightingale is the book that made her a household name, and for many listeners it is the more devastating of the two. Set in Nazi-occupied France and following two sisters who resist in very different ways, it is narrated by Audie Award-winner Polly Stone, whose handling of the French-accented cast is one of the most praised performances in the historical-fiction catalog.
France, 1939. Vianne Mauriac watches her husband leave for the front, then must survive the occupation when a German officer is billeted in her home, making impossible choices to protect her daughter. Her younger sister Isabelle, reckless and passionate, joins the Resistance, risking everything to lead downed Allied airmen to safety across the Pyrenees. The novel alternates between the two sisters, one fighting a quiet war of survival, the other a dangerous war of active resistance, and it illuminates a part of WWII history often overlooked: the women's war, fought at home, without medals, at unimaginable personal cost. It builds to an emotional payoff that has left a generation of readers in tears.
Stone won an Audie Award for her work here, and it is easy to hear why. The book demands a narrator who can distinguish two sisters, plus a large cast of French villagers, German officers, and children, across seventeen hours, and Stone does it without ever showing off. Her French pronunciation is spot-on, her accent work leaves no doubt who is speaking, and, crucially for material this emotional, she keeps control where a lesser narrator would tip into melodrama. The most devastating passages land so hard precisely because she trusts them. Reviewers repeatedly single out her performance as elevating an already strong novel; several confess to weeping in the car.
Like The Four Winds, this is an emotionally punishing listen, war, loss, deprivation, and cruelty are constant, and the ending is engineered to devastate. It earns its emotion, but it is not a comfort read, and sensitive listeners should be prepared. Hannah's style is unabashedly emotional; those who prefer restraint may find it heightened. But for a sweeping, immersive, good-cry WWII epic, it is one of the finest in the format.

Polly Stone narrates the Macmillan Audio edition, and she won an Audie Award for the performance. Her French pronunciation and ability to distinguish a large cast across seventeen hours are consistently singled out by reviewers as exceptional.
For fans of sweeping, emotional historical fiction, very much so, and Stone's award-winning narration is a major part of why the audio edition is so beloved. It is one of the most emotionally powerful WWII novels in the format. Be prepared for a heavy, tear-jerking story.
Both are excellent Kristin Hannah epics with acclaimed narration. The Nightingale (WWII France) is the more famous and, for many, more devastating; The Four Winds (Dust Bowl America) is narrated by Julia Whelan. Which you prefer usually comes down to which historical setting draws you more, you cannot go wrong with either.
About 17 hours 19 minutes, a substantial listen, but the alternating-sisters structure and Stone's narration keep it moving faster than the runtime suggests.
